About Shutterstock Keyword Generator

Shutterstock metadata for a whole batch, in one file

Shutterstock reads a CSV beside your uploads and fills in each photo's description, keywords and categories by its file name. Photo Keyworder writes that file from what each photo shows, suggests categories from Shutterstock's own list, and names any photo that would be refused before you upload it.

What goes in the Shutterstock file

  • Seven columnsFilename, Description, Keywords, Categories, Illustration, Mature Content and Editorial: the columns Shutterstock's CSV upload names.
  • DescriptionOne plain sentence about what is in the photo, up to 200 characters.
  • KeywordsShutterstock asks for 7 to 50. A photo with fewer than 7 is named before you upload, so it is not sent back for missing keywords.
  • CategoriesOne or two of Shutterstock's 26 photo categories, such as Arts, People or Food and drink, suggested from the scene. One is required.
  • EditorialTurn it on for news and event photos with recognisable people or logos and no release. Illustration and Mature Content are written as No.

How it works

  1. Drop in up to 50 JPEG, PNG or WebP photos, and add context such as the event or place if it helps.
  2. Read each photo's description, keywords and categories, edit anything, and mark the batch editorial if it needs it.
  3. Download the Shutterstock CSV and add it with Upload CSV on the Submit page, once the photos are uploaded.

What you get

  • A one-sentence description for every photo
  • 12 to 25 grounded keywords a photo, with room for your own up to 50
  • One or two Shutterstock categories suggested for each photo
  • One CSV for the batch, with the editorial mark set as you choose

Price 15 credits per completed photo. One credit balance works across every HivemindOS Mini app.

Questions

How many keywords does Shutterstock allow?
Between 7 and 50 a photo. Photo Keyworder writes 12 to 25 grounded ones, so most photos pass as they are, and the download names any that fall short.
Which categories can a photo have?
One or two from Shutterstock's 26 photo categories. The suggestion follows the scene, a concert as Arts, a portrait as People, a plate of food as Food and drink, and you can change it on each photo.
When should a photo be marked editorial?
When it shows recognisable people, private property or brand marks you have no release for, as most news, street and event photos do. Editorial photos can still be licensed, for news and commentary rather than advertising.
Do I upload the CSV with the photos?
No. Upload the photos first, then add the CSV on its own with Upload CSV on the Submit page. Rows are matched to photos by exact file name, capital letters included.
Is there a file for Getty Images or iStock?
No. Getty Images and iStock take keywords only from their own vocabulary, chosen inside their own upload tool, so a list of keywords would not carry over. The Lightroom download still keeps your own library searchable.
